Sufficient Grace
SCAD Senior Capstone Collection

Designer’s Statement
This collection was born from my faith in God, the struggle with perfectionism, and the growing pains of my spiritual journey.
From being isolated from friend groups,
a pastor asking me to leave his church,
To questioning my worth,
And searching for it in other people.
All born from a lack of grace given and received.
I thought perfection = worthiness in the eyes of the divine.
And that despite my strive for such,
I would never be enough to God or anyone around me.
But still,
grace is given to me,
light is still within me,
and beauty never left me.
I’m not an angel.
I’m not perfect.
But I’m still worthy.
And the same applies to you.

- Mesh and Georgette stretched while sewn (didn't do a stay stitch)
- Started over the mesh patterns, stay stitched
TOILE

39 HOURS & 18 MINUTES
This is when I learned that Mesh had to be stay stitched so it wouldn't stretch, especially sewn with wovens.
I also learned that georgette warps if it is stretched while sewn.
I wanted to add princess seams in to have as much control as I can with fit.
I learned that the stretched georgette significantly affected the fit around the bust and how the seams matched with the mesh.
By critique, my professors advised that I kept the fabrics light-weighted and woven.

Perfecting fit

Handsewn chiffon textile on base
After making a quarter toile in muslin, I edited my patterns and walked them to assure perfect construction and fit.

LOOK 4
Originally, like shown before, i wanted a nude base corset with patches of chiffon, but overtime, I liked the idea of covering the entire thing with my handsewn technique.

TOILE: 38 HOURS & 32 MINUTES
This is when I learned that corsets are always made a big snugger to make up the stretch/movement of skin vs. the rounding up of model measurements.

FINAL
For the final, I took in the corset patterns by 1/4" on side and princess seams, 1/2" in CF to better fit the model.
Now I know for next time that true-to-size doesn't always mean perfect fit!
